ABOUT US

The I.S. Hankins-F.A. Johnson Education Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) charitable organization that was established in March 1993, by the Orlando Alumni Chapter (Delta Xi Lambda) of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The foundation was named in honor our beloved Brothers Isaiah Sylvester Hankins and Felton A. Johnson.

The purpose of the Foundation is to promote, support, and instill in youth the values of high educational achievement, leadership, and community service. The Foundation provides academic, personal, leadership and social development to young men in the Metro Orlando area through the Young Men of Distinction Mentoring Program (YMOD). The Foundation also provides funding for Academic Scholarships, Head Start to Literacy, Oratorical Competitions, and other educational and community service initiatives.

Dr. Isaiah Sylvester Hankins

Brother Hankins was Orlando’s pioneer black physician who campaigned for improved race relations and black home ownership. Dr. Hankins was born in Orlando and attended Johnson Academy through the 8th grade, the highest grade offered for African American children in Orlando at the time.

Brother Johnson was an educator for 38 years. For 27 years, Felton A. Johnson has run Orange Center Elementary. Brother Johnson instilled in his school population a sense of self-worth and respect. Born and raised in Orlando, Johnson graduated from Jones High School. After college, he was music director at Jones and principal of Hannibal Elementary and Webster Avenue schools.
